Self, Sense and Spirit: The Basic Guide to Knowing and Improving Yourself

SelfOne of the earliest discoveries of many spiritual people, regardless of religion, is that they have to detach from certain mental obsessions and physical dependencies. But how do you deny urges and temptation? Here are some aspects of your being that you need to cleanse and deal with before any real change can start.

Self

A difficult thing to let go of is the Self. Words like, “I can’t live without you,” and “I have to do this!” become such a daily driving statement that it tricks you into thinking it’s okay to just think about the Self. Some people find comfort in knowing they’re living the high or fast life, but for many, it becomes tiresome and more harmful. They need to let go of their Selves.

Sense

How does one exactly let go? People may choose to do art classes, theatre or yoga, but these won't go deeper than your own self-fulfilment. Tune your senses to become more aware of the needs of others. Questions such as “What can I do to help them?” or "How can I be of service?" becomes more a frequent as you focus on others. These kinds of teachings are part of any religious approaches, the more contemporary meditation talks and Reiki healing courses.

Spirit

There's something beyond the physical realm. Your spirit realizes you can’t live on feeding your soul and senses. Becoming individuals who act out of kindness is not all there is to proper spiritual cleansing. Your spirit has needs too. Just like any physical body that needs to be fed, you need to find the right kind of spiritual feeding and stick to that regimen.

Be aware of what you stand for, and how you want to spend your present life and the next. Taking spiritual courses isn't the only way to do it, but it’s a start. Maybe, in the end, after searching, you just need to quiet your self, spirit and senses. Listen to that voice that’s been there all along but hardly heeded.
